Would reinstate illegal immigration crackdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - One day after Governor Lincoln Chafee rescinded the so-called "E-Verify" mandate cracking down on illegal immigration in Rhode Island, two state lawmakers want the requirement reinstated.

The Providence Journal reports that Representatives Joseph Trillo and Peter Palumbo plan on introducing legislation that mirrors Governor Don Carcieri's controversial executive order.

It required all state agencies and vendors to electronically verify the immigration status of all new employees.

Governor Chafee pledged to rescind the order during his gubernatorial campaign.
