Indians were supposedly the largest group to be issued H1B and L visas by the US last year, Peter Haas, who was recently appointed consul general in Mumbai, has put forth.

He said, “While 8 lakh Americans travel to India each year, the US issues half a million non-immigration visas to Indians yearly.”

People-to-people contact in Indo-US ties

He stated that there were as many as one lakh Indians studying in the US and 2.8 million Indian-Americans were living there. He articulated the importance of people-to-people contact in Indo-US ties.

Stressing on the fact that Indian citizens received a large number of H1B and L visas by the US, he said that people-to-people connections are more powerful than any government initiative.

In an attempt to tap the large Indian-American population, the US state department ha reportedly created a new position, Senior Advisor for Outreach.

He added,"These Indian-Americans cherish their ties back to India and they support strong ties between the US and India. But they don't always know how to build them."

US-India share robust economic ties

Just so that the the Indian-Americans can be strongly linked to the Indians, the new Senior Advisor hopes for a stronger US-India partnership.

"Tens of thousands of Americans now work for companies with names like Essar, Tata, Reliance, Mahindra and Wockhardt" he said.

He added "I will be seeking inputs from business leaders on how we can continue to grow our already robust economic ties."
